Course Overview:

This is a unique and pioneering course which is scientifically validated. It is a blended course starting with an initial 8 week online Programme Access Course, which is then followed by a ten month training programme, which because of the experiential nature of Mindfulness also includes class-room based learnings.

The course, whilst primarily teaching Mindfulness Based Interventions, also draws upon research evidence from emerging fields within Modern Psychology.

During the course you will learn a unique blend of evidence-based tools and learnings from Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). However, contemporary Mindfulness research indicates that the support of tools from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Positive Psychology help mediate the effects of existing negative thinking styles, thus facilitating deeper levels of Mindfulness practice.

Therefore, because of this emerging research all our courses include the necessary Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Positive Psychology learnings to support Mindfulness practice.

  • The lineage of mindfulness - the convergence of an eastern spiritual tradition with western science.

  • Contemporary neuroscience research indicating the benefits of mindfulness.

  • Neuroplasticity - how the brain changes itself.

  • Understanding how our mind works and the role of thought in mindfulness.

  • Functions of the conscious and unconscious mind and how they interact in enhancing or detracting from mindfulness practice.

  • How to use our sensory system as the foundation stone of mindfulness practice.

  • Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) - the interplay of thoughts/feelings/emotions.

  • The autopilot of the mind - it's advantages and disadvantages in mindfulness.

  • Mindfulness and Flow - The Psychology of Happiness.

  • Elements drawn from MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) and MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy) incorporating both formal and informal Mindfulness practices.

  • The use of mindfulness in clinical practice.

  • Exercises from Mindfulness Based Compassionate Living.(MBCL)

  • Evidence-based practices from CBT to negate the effects of unhelpful thinking styles at a conscious level.

  • Adapting mindfulness to match the needs of unique individuals.

  • Contra-indications of particular mindfulness practices in certain conditions/contexts/ cohorts.

  • Current research re Mindfulness in Clinical Practice and across contexts.

  • Physiological markers of 'The Relaxation Response' during meditation.

  • A suite of meditation practices drawn from the original MBSR program.

  • Scientifically validated theory and techniques from Positive Psychology (the science of happiness).

  • Mindfulness in everyday life: How to develop and maintain an ongoing personal and professional mindfulness practice.

  • Role-play to gain experience and confidence in the delivery of mindfulness classes.

Course Content: Presentation Skills

  • Training will be provided on course content, structure, design and professional presentation skills

  • Methodology of facilitating mindfulness classes, courses and workshops in introductory settings.

  • Best practices for delivering mindfulness courses in community, school or organisational settings. 

Course Content: Business Development 

  • Guidance will be given to help the student develop their business to deliver mindfulness courses to his/her chosen audience.

Student Assessment

Assessment will be by continual assessment comprising of a number of elements:

  • Full completion of the 8 week online Course Access Programme.

  • Attendance at all training days.

  • Attendance for the full length of all training days.

  • Monthly submission of various learning tasks, which includes questions, short written essays, case studies, summarising of relevant research articles.

  • Monthly submission of students 'Reflection on Learning'.

  • Active participation in the private online course discussion forum.

  • Submission of recordings of sample meditations of student leading  meditation practices.

  • Applications are invited from those with a professional qualification in mental or physical health care, education or social care, or equivalent life experience, in the context within which the teaching will take place.

  • Those who have a commitment to a daily personal mindfulness practice.

Course Framework:

Stage 1:

Programme Access Course: 

This is an online 8 week program which introduces students to the key concepts that will be taught during the 10 month classroom based course. Assessment will be through online submissions, reflective journalling and participation in an online learning system. A commitment to shared learning and appreciation of Mindfulness in an online environment is a key element at this stage of the course. Successful completion of Stage 1 is essential to proceed to Stage 2 of the course. Total hours - 30 hours.

Stage 2:

Live Online or Classroom Based Teaching:

This usually consists of ten classroom modules which run at weekends in Dublin. However, due to covid restrictions some or all of these weekends will be conducted in a live online format via the Zoom platform.  Each of the ten classroom weekends consists of two teaching days - Saturday and Sunday. Course runs from 10am to 5pm both days. Total Stage 2 hours -140 hours.

Home Based Learnings:

In addition to the taught component, students will need to set aside 7-8 hours per week for home based, online tutor-led and private study. These hours also include time allocated to personal practice of Formal and Informal Mindfulness practices and completion of written assignments. Total hours - 320 hours.

Assessment of competency as a Mindfulness teacher will be based on the industry standard of  Mindfulness-based Interventions Teaching Assessment Criteria.

Course Facilitators and Code of Ethics:

The lead tutor on this course is Carmel Farnan. All trainers at the Mindfulness Academy are Psychologists and Psychotherapists with in excess of twenty years clinical experience, who subsequently undertook training in Mindfulness. Our trainers have facilitated Mindfulness Training for Professionals internationally since 1999 in Ireland, UK, Canada and UAE. All our trainers are individual members of Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, Psychological Society of Ireland or British Psychological Society. Adherence to the ethical codes of British Psychological Society takes precedence throughout this course.



On successful completion of all stages of the course students will be awarded a 'Diploma in Teaching Mindfulness and Positive Psychology'

(Note: the clinical use of MBCT teachings from the course is only permitted by those students who hold a relevant mental health qualification).

This course, with its original design provides students with the key skills to build and establish their own in-depth Mindfulness practice. €500 deposit is payable on acceptance onto the course. This is non-refundable and non-transferable.

There is currently no professional or statutory registration required to teach or facilitate mindfulness-based interventions. However, this course totalling 490 hours, exceeds the current recommendation for teacher training of 450 course hours.
